This is what the skin care industry has spent millions of dollars to get you to believe: “You have to have a different product for different types of skin!”
Why? So they can make and sell more products! The fact is that very few people “fit” a specific category of skin type. Most are in varying degrees and many change with the seasons, with different ages, or with changes in hormone production. Even if you do fit consistently in one category, you may have other members of your household that are in a different category or change over time. How do I really know what “type” of skin I have? I thought I had dry skin so I tried some dry skin products that just made me oily. So I tried some normal skin products that dried me out. In one brand I was mostly normal, then switched to another brand and was “slightly oily”. It is like a math quiz. I don’t know if I have the wrong product or my skin just doesn’t stay the same all the time.
My skin is so dry in the winter that I can scratch welts into my body. I have to use thick, oily products to get any relief, which throws my makeup for a loop! But in the spring and summer, my skin is just fine and I have to get all new products for normal skin. I always seem to waste some products that have to sit on the shelf until their next “season” rolls around.
My skin has always been extremely oily, my daughter’s skin has always been dry. As she has matured though, she seems to go through growth spurts, which cause her skin to be oily. I am dealing with menopause and my hormones are starting to go crazy. I think I may become less consistent than my daughter! I just can’t keep up and it is becoming an expensive guessing game!
I do not know where I got my skin! Parts of it are so oily and other parts do not give me any trouble at all. At the same time, I have a section that stays dry and irritated. I have creams for them all, each with different directions and application procedures. I am just tired ofremembering which one to put on what part of my face!
